Hiya.
Seeing as many of the Evangenitals extended family of fans, friends, and free-loving frolickers are spread out all over the globe, and/or really busy, and/or broke or somehow otherwise unable to make it out to our live shows (mainly occurring in Los Angeles) I have gone ahead and posted a few tracks from last night's performance at Molly Malones on the Evangenitals website for your listening pleasure!
http://www.evangenitals.com/music.html
You can even download the tracks for FREE should you want to listen to them again and again, forever and for aye.
This fine evening of music featured me, Juli Crockett (Lead Vocals, Rhythm Guitar) with:
Henry Bermudez: Lead Guitar
Lisa Dee: Vocals, Tambourine, Kazoo
David Hurlin: Drums, Shakers, Percussion
Keith Lubow: Bass is the Place
In other news, we just found out that we're going to be closing the show at the Eagle Rock Music Festival on Saturday October 4th. We will be playing on the main "Emerging" stage, with video projections and other theatrics, at 11pm. The last act! Yee-haw!
We'll be getting our act TIGHT and RIGHT by working it out at our home-base -- the infamous Mr T's Bowl in Highland Park -- for the next 3 Tuesdays, hosting music nights with various music-making friends.
Check out the show dates here:
http://www.evangenitals.com/calendar.html
Now, if you have any suggestions for our Eagle Rock Music Fest set list, I'd love to hear 'em! We only get one chance to make a first impression on the throngs of people that attend this Fest! So tell me... What made YOU fall in love with the Evangenitals? What do YOU want to hear belted through the streets of Eagle Rock? Let me know! I care! :-)
Much love,
Juli & the Evangenitals

What an awesome night...

Lisa Dee and I went to see Evangenitals gift from the Lord and bassist (among a multitude of other instruments-player) Keith Lubow play with Deborah McColl at South Pasadena Music. Her tunes were sweet and deep and philosophical and heartbreaking and when she crooned "it's raining, it's raining, but we're connected now" my heart did in fact break open and the tears began to flow. It was such a beautiful set I had to water it like a flower. :-)
The next song, she announced, was co-written by her and her lover, soul mate, and guitarist of 15 years (Keith's dad, guitarist Patrick Lubow). They started the song a month before he died, and they finished it, together, she said, a month after he died. Gorgeous. Lovely. Love. Straight up Rumi and Shams
. I dig it.
You can download the song "We're Connected" for free, here: We're Connected mp3.
Post-show, I went back to Keith's mom's house (she and Deborah are both huge fans and supporters of the Evangenitals) and we ended up having an impromptu all-requests Evangenitals hootenanny, with Keith and I on dueling guitars. I, of course, am no match for his ludicrous multi-instrumentalist abilities. It's awe-inspiring how many different things he can play: bass, guitar, mandolin, banjo, trumpet, trombone, ukulele, harmonica... and that's just what was available in the room! I'm sure there's more.
Accompanying us were violinist Andrea Baker (formerly of Evangenitals pal-band Shaped Like a Gun! Small world!) playing the mandolin, her husband (a composer who's name is totally escaping me) playing the uke, and James Graham, mandolin-player and vocalist for Deborah McColl, plucking around on the banjo. Nashville guitar genius Gary Talley of The Box Tops was in the room and listening... however, he was on to drinking wine and off of playing for the night.
We did a ton of Evangenitals songs, including a bad-ass version of The Hole with Keith on the Trumpet, and some really awesome covers of June Carter's "Tall Lover Man", Johnny Cash's "Long Black Veil" (with 4 part harmonies!), and Bob Dylan's "I'll Be Your Baby Tonight". Good times, and such an honor to get to hang out and harmonize with such incredible musicians.
(FYI: There's actually a pretty dope video of Keith, myself, and Evangenitals drummer David Hurlin playing the new Klezmer-punk version of The Hole atop The 1 Second Film's Road to Oprah bus with iJustine and Brookers here: Evangenitals, iJustine, & The 1 Second Film.)
At 2:30am I sold an Evangenitals CD to a nice man visiting from Australia who said that my vocal stylings reminded him of one of his favorite Australian vocalizing twins, from the band "Johnny Cash Converters" in Melbourne, which is a clever play on words in Australia, where a "Cash Converter" is a sort of high-end thrift shop, he explained. The fact that I am the June Carter in the premier Johnny Cash tribute band Cash'd Out made the associations even more aligned. Then he showed me some Australian currency, which is beautiful, and it even has a little plastic see-through window in it. Transparency in Currency?!? Whaaaat?!?!
My Evangenitals heart was stretched all over the nation tonight, though, as guitarist Henry Bermudez was up in San Francisco playing with Unpopable (one of his many awesome bands) at the wedding of balloon artist Addi Somekh, and David Hurlin is in Fairfield, Iowa getting indoctrinated into a new job at the soon-to-be-launched awesome music site 3mix.com and playing some gigs, tonight's with the Jefferson County Green Band.
The gang will all be back together soon, however, for the Evangenitals Family Hootenanny at Molly Malones on Tuesday September 9th. Hopefully a bunch of folks will come out, as every show I get to play with this current collection of Evangenitals is a spiritual experience and I have a feeling the 9th is going to be a new height of sublimation. It's a feeeeeeeeeeeeeeeling.
In other news, I'm officially, thoroughly, and totally addicted to Twitter, so if you find yourself wondering what I'm doing just about every second of every day... I'm doing my damndest to share it. The MICRO-blogging is, I realize, having an effect on my MACRO-blogging, though. After giving mini-updates all day long via text message, sitting down and committing to a full testimonial of the day has proven rather difficult to muster the enthusiasm for. It seems, however, the trick is to have more ludicrously awesome nights like tonight which make me want to share the love and link every single person place and thing that I encountered for the world to see. I'll do my best to say yes to more of these experiences and keep the news a'flowing.
In the meantimes, however, you can totally follow me on Twitter. :-)
p.s.
You can follow David Hurlin on Twitter, too. :-)

This is a blast from the past that was brought to mind while strolling along a surprisingly peaceful and lovely chunk of the LA River today...
Back when I was writing The Dawn of Quixote: Chapter The First and reading lots of Unamuno's Our Lord Don Quixote, I had a sort of Code of Ethics written on my wall which I am reprinting here for your possible enjoyment and edification. If you go so far as to take the word into action, all the better!

If you go so far as to take the word into action, all the better!
The Code:
1. Set Loose a Delirium
2. Commit an Outrage (a Barbarity)
3. Let Your Horse Lead You
4. Fight (Adventures which Befall)
5. Find the Selpulchre (Search)
6. Love (Chaste, from Afar)
7. Assuage Self-Loathing with Self-Annihilation
8. Endure the Inevitable
9. Judge Not (Lest Ye Be Judged)
10. Explore all Caves (Caverns, Crevices)
11. Attack all Puppet Shows
12. Speak Fair to All Goat herders
13. Commend Thy Self to Thy Love and Thy Lord
14. State Your Full Name and Purpose
15. Have Faith
16. Trust Not Thine Eyes, Nor Ears, Nor Tastes
17. Treat All Ladies as Maidens
18. Fear Not
19. Read Until Mad (Delirium)
20. Believe in Fairy Tales, Myths, and All Dieties.
21. Do Not Debate (Debacle) Do not Reason with the Reasoners
22. Face Ridicule

Just came across this video on YouTube of Evangenitals drummer/percussionist/peacemaker David Hurlin performing an extended drum solo back in Iowa with the Jefferson County Green Band.
Now that we know he's got it in him, you can expect some serious "dynamics of the drum" demonstrations at upcoming Evangenitals jamborees. :-)

We are testing out a new form TONIGHT at the Tre Stage in Hollywood - Improv and Evangenitals music TOGETHER. I'll be performing in both of them, I'm terrified, and I'd love for you to be there! :-)
First up in my Improv group Hammerspace at 9pm, perform long-form improv based on whatever suggestions and deep questions you give us. (http://www.myspace.com/hammerspace_improv)
Then, at 10pm the Evangenitals will start to develop our new stage show BEFORE YOUR EYES in this theatrical and intimate setting! We will be taking audience suggestions as well, so bring your keen directorial instincts and help us shape the future of the Evangenitals!
Both of these artistic pursuits work better when there is actually an audience present, so I hope that you may be able to make time in your busy life to come and see our maiden voyage of this new combination!

This is from drummer David Hurlin's blog "Dynamics of the Drum-- I loved it so much I figured I'd share it here, too:
**
Playing with the Evangenitals at the Nocturnal Bar in Santa Monica during our Klezmer remix of the infamous song "THE HOLE" which I absolutely love, I was hitting the drums hard. Juli Crockett was belting out her chant "Hole Hole Hole Hole" on the quarter notes and i was smashing my cymbal in accordance with her ferocious chanting. It was a pure stretch of symbiotic rapture, the whole band writhing in a collective exorcism.
In spite of how loud or violent with Joy it got I remained relaxed. I realized that by keeping pure relaxation, the kind of relaxation you feel when you're not playing, by holding that as the foundation of the drumming, then you can explore volume and its various pleasures both quiet and loud to a point.

on this night, the evangenitals jammed...
it's really late, i'm fresh home from a gig, sleep deprived and hungry, thirsty and in love.
at some moment or other during tonight's show, i experienced a joyous and profound love for every single band member and was filled with genuine child-like GLEE at just how lucky i am to be making music with each and every one of these people
we HARMONIZE. we join in song and make waves. it is collaborative and creative and generative and magical and i'm simply stupid in love with the whole marvelous thing.
the feeling of really, truly being in a band is something i fantasized about as a child and feel absolutely blessed to be experiencing, in burst of vibrating sound and light, on stage and off with the people of the evangenitals.
so yes, all you evangenitals out there, both the ones on stage with me and the ones in the audience who help our music to thrive with your open ears, open hearts, and goooooood energy, thanks for letting me love you. it feels real good to feel good in your direction. :-)
love,
juli

"The Joy Team"
Tonight was a very, very good night for the Evangenitals. Something happened in that room that is important, magical, beautiful, and GOOD. A bubble floated in front of my eyes during Quee Queg, illuminated by a shaft of stage lighting. Henry played the blues, Lisa sang Opera, David joyfully created a collective heartbeat, and Keith's debut with us on the bass filled my backbone with deep, happy thuds of glee.
For the first time tonight, an interpretive-dance gunfight was staged in the audience (can it really be called it an "audience" when they are such a part of the show?) during Sergio by Stodder & Crystal, Laura wore her Evangenitals t-shirt, I could see Albert's smile in the dark, Keith's mom glowed with pride, Kelly Chase of Hammerspace danced, the guys from With a Bible and a Gun nodded in approval (ah, winning the respect of the other band is a great feeling, especially when they are friggin' awesome). Bubbles were blown. Moments were shared. All present were given a nice sonic bath in everlovin' Evangenital joy.
We were given a new nickname... "Team Joy". Thanks Stodder. I like it very much.
Next stop, the INTEGRATRON!
And now, I sleep.
I love you, dear reader, whoever you are, with all my heart. Just because.
Love,
Juli

On Tuesday June 24th (that’s tomorrow!) at 10:30pm The Evangenitals will be debuting a never-before-heard lineup of players at Molly Malone’s, immediately following the hotshot Los Angeles-based Johnny Cash tribute band “With a Bible and a Gun” at 9:30. It will be an awesome night of music, not too late, and it’s only $6 to see it!
(Note: this is not the Johnny Cash tribute band that Evangenital Juli has been singing with. That’s “Cash’d Out” of San Diego)
As a special incentive for attending this exciting show that will feature brand new songs and new versions of old classics, we are offering everyone who tells the doorman you’re there to see the Evangenitals a FREE “last supper” Evangenitals poster. There will also be complimentary bubbles available for your ambient pleasure.
On this glorious night the Evangenitals will feature Henry Bermudez on lead guitar, David Hurlin on drums, and our newest extended-family member Keith Lubow on bass. Lisa Dee will be shocking the world with her vocal harmonies (especially on our new Klezmer-inspired version of The Hole) and I, Juli Crockett, will be loving you with all my heart, whether you can make it to the show or not. Though I really hope you can make it.
Molly Malone’s
575 South Fairfax Ave
Los Angeles, CA 90036
Evangenitals @ 10:30pm
