This is a blast from the past that was brought to mind while strolling along a surprisingly peaceful and lovely chunk of the LA River today...

Back when I was writing The Dawn of Quixote: Chapter The First and reading lots of Unamuno's Our Lord Don Quixote, I had a sort of Code of Ethics written on my wall which I am reprinting here for your possible enjoyment and edification. If you go so far as to take the word into action, all the better!

The Code:

1. Set Loose a Delirium
2. Commit an Outrage (a Barbarity)
3. Let Your Horse Lead You
4. Fight (Adventures which Befall)
5. Find the Selpulchre (Search)
6. Love (Chaste, from Afar)
7. Assuage Self-Loathing with Self-Annihilation
8. Endure the Inevitable
9. Judge Not (Lest Ye Be Judged)
10. Explore all Caves (Caverns, Crevices)
11. Attack all Puppet Shows
12. Speak Fair to All Goat herders
13. Commend Thy Self to Thy Love and Thy Lord
14. State Your Full Name and Purpose
15. Have Faith
16. Trust Not Thine Eyes, Nor Ears, Nor Tastes
17. Treat All Ladies as Maidens
18. Fear Not
19. Read Until Mad (Delirium)
20. Believe in Fairy Tales, Myths, and All Dieties.
21. Do Not Debate (Debacle) Do not Reason with the Reasoners
22. Face Ridicule

Just came across this video on YouTube of Evangenitals drummer/percussionist/peacemaker David Hurlin performing an extended drum solo back in Iowa with the Jefferson County Green Band.

Now that we know he's got it in him, you can expect some serious "dynamics of the drum" demonstrations at upcoming Evangenitals jamborees. :-)

We are testing out a new form TONIGHT at the Tre Stage in Hollywood - Improv and Evangenitals music TOGETHER. I'll be performing in both of them, I'm terrified, and I'd love for you to be there! :-)

First up in my Improv group Hammerspace at 9pm, perform long-form improv based on whatever suggestions and deep questions you give us. (http://www.myspace.com/hammerspace_improv)

Then, at 10pm the Evangenitals will start to develop our new stage show BEFORE YOUR EYES in this theatrical and intimate setting! We will be taking audience suggestions as well, so bring your keen directorial instincts and help us shape the future of the Evangenitals!

Both of these artistic pursuits work better when there is actually an audience present, so I hope that you may be able to make time in your busy life to come and see our maiden voyage of this new combination!

It all happens TONIGHT - Sunday July 27th -

This is from drummer David Hurlin's blog "Dynamics of the Drum-- I loved it so much I figured I'd share it here, too:

**

Playing with the Evangenitals at the Nocturnal Bar in Santa Monica during our Klezmer remix of the infamous song "THE HOLE" which I absolutely love, I was hitting the drums hard. Juli Crockett was belting out her chant "Hole Hole Hole Hole" on the quarter notes and i was smashing my cymbal in accordance with her ferocious chanting. It was a pure stretch of symbiotic rapture, the whole band writhing in a collective exorcism.

In spite of how loud or violent with Joy it got I remained relaxed. I realized that by keeping pure relaxation, the kind of relaxation you feel when you're not playing, by holding that as the foundation of the drumming, then you can explore volume and its various pleasures both quiet and loud to a point.

on this night, the evangenitals jammed...

it's really late, i'm fresh home from a gig, sleep deprived and hungry, thirsty and in love.

at some moment or other during tonight's show, i experienced a joyous and profound love for every single band member and was filled with genuine child-like GLEE at just how lucky i am to be making music with each and every one of these people

we HARMONIZE. we join in song and make waves. it is collaborative and creative and generative and magical and i'm simply stupid in love with the whole marvelous thing.

the feeling of really, truly being in a band is something i fantasized about as a child and feel absolutely blessed to be experiencing, in burst of vibrating sound and light, on stage and off with the people of the evangenitals.

so yes, all you evangenitals out there, both the ones on stage with me and the ones in the audience who help our music to thrive with your open ears, open hearts, and goooooood energy, thanks for letting me love you. it feels real good to feel good in your direction. :-)

love,
juli

"The Joy Team"

Tonight was a very, very good night for the Evangenitals. Something happened in that room that is important, magical, beautiful, and GOOD. A bubble floated in front of my eyes during Quee Queg, illuminated by a shaft of stage lighting. Henry played the blues, Lisa sang Opera, David joyfully created a collective heartbeat, and Keith's debut with us on the bass filled my backbone with deep, happy thuds of glee.

For the first time tonight, an interpretive-dance gunfight was staged in the audience (can it really be called it an "audience" when they are such a part of the show?) during Sergio by Stodder & Crystal, Laura wore her Evangenitals t-shirt, I could see Albert's smile in the dark, Keith's mom glowed with pride, Kelly Chase of Hammerspace danced, the guys from With a Bible and a Gun nodded in approval (ah, winning the respect of the other band is a great feeling, especially when they are friggin' awesome). Bubbles were blown. Moments were shared. All present were given a nice sonic bath in everlovin' Evangenital joy.

We were given a new nickname... "Team Joy". Thanks Stodder. I like it very much.

Next stop, the INTEGRATRON!

And now, I sleep.

I love you, dear reader, whoever you are, with all my heart. Just because.

Love,
Juli

On Tuesday June 24th (that’s tomorrow!) at 10:30pm The Evangenitals will be debuting a never-before-heard lineup of players at Molly Malone’s, immediately following the hotshot Los Angeles-based Johnny Cash tribute band “With a Bible and a Gun” at 9:30. It will be an awesome night of music, not too late, and it’s only $6 to see it!

There will also be complimentary bubbles available for your ambient pleasure.

On this glorious night the Evangenitals will feature Henry Bermudez on lead guitar, David Hurlin on drums, and our newest extended-family member Keith Lubow on bass. Lisa Dee will be shocking the world with her vocal harmonies (especially on our new Klezmer-inspired version of The Hole) and I, Juli Crockett, will be loving you with all my heart, whether you can make it to the show or not. Though I really hope you can make it.

The Evangenitals present: something old, something new, something borrowed, and some blues

This is an important and intimate night for the Evangenitals and I hope you can join us.

First of all, it's the very first time we're playing at this venue, so we'd like to make a good impression - ideally one that makes us look "happening" and "popular".

Secondly, and more importantly, we're going to be debuting a handful of new, never-before-played tunes, as well as taking a stroll down memory lane and playing some key songs from Evangenital history.

It's going to be a stripped-down, intimate, and melodic evening feature Juli Crockett on lead vocals, Lisa Dee on the harmonies, Henry Bermudez on lead guitar, and David Hurlin on the drums.

For those of you who are fans of the slower side of the Evangenitals, this night will surely provide some soul-food for your aching spots. :-)

I sure hope you can make it. We'd love to share this world premier moment with you!

This is going to be an incredible weekend! Here's the scoop...

Evangenitals lead singer Juli Crockett (that's me!) and drummer George Bernardo are driving to Las Vegas tomorrow to perform with our *other* band CASH'D OUT (http://www.myspace.com/cashdout) the world's premier Johnny Cash tribute band, in which I curl my hair and sing the June Carter parts and Georgie, well, he plays the drums!

If you live in Las Vegas (Friday night @ the ICEHOUSE) or Phoenix (Saturday night @ GOATHEAD SALOON) and would like to check us out, write to me! I've got some comp tickets (compliments of the Evangenitals) for the first to respond! :-)

On Sunday morning I'll be jumping on a plane back to LA, where we'll be rockin' the backporch of the Echo from 5:30pm - 9pm during the "Grand Ole Echo" country music review.

It's the record release party for I See Hawks and there is an incredible lineup inside: The Chapin Sisters, Mike Stinson, Old Californio (featuring sometime Evangenitals bassist Jason Chesney on Guitar!?!) and of course I See Hawks.

We're encouraging everyone to bring their banjos, hand claps, whistles, and whatnots and join us for the ultimate hootenanny on the backporch -- right next to the barbecue.

The Grand Ole Echo shows are ALL AGES, they are FREE, and they are TONS of FUN!

And hey, if you can't make it to this one, you can see us THE VERY NEXT NIGHT (Monday June 9th) plugged in at the Bordello (aka the swankest venue in LA) playing with the SPECTACULAR Western-Swing trio "Shotgun Party" from Austin, TX. Full details here:
http://www.evangenitals.com/calendar.html

Here's the details for Sunday:

What: The Grand Ole Echo
Where: The Echo
1822 Sunset Blvd.
Los Angeles (Echo Park), CA 90023
http://www.myspace.com/thegrandoleecho
When: Sunday June 8th from 5PM-9PM
ALL AGES
FREE

Doors open at 5PM and the great music starts at 5:30PM and ends at 9PM, so you can get back home in time to wash your face and say your prayers.

Relax out back on the Echo patio and enjoy the warm summer weather and eat some BBQ with the Evangenitals!

Hello, dearest blog reader.

I don't know if you've ever heard of the "Rose City Rocks" Pasadena Music Festival, but that's beside the point. The point IS that the Evangenitals are kicking the festivities off with a FREE show at McMurphy's Irish Tavern in Old Town Pasadena at 9pm on Wednesday May 28th!

It's our first show in what seems like a looooooong time (I had a play about the History of Water to write & direct) and we're itching to spread our musical joy all over the joint. I hope you can join us. It's a pretty early show for a school night... and did I mention that it's FREE???

We'll be rockin' an uber-unique lineup on this glorious night: our dear George Bernardo (Cash'd Out) is back with us on drums, David Hurlin (Artichoke) is chiming in on Tablas, Henry Bermudez (Unpopable, etc) is ripping up the lead guitar, and extra-special guest Mike Ibarra (Killsonic, El Haru Kuroi, Cat Hair Ensemble) will join us on the UPRIGHT BASS!!! I don't know if I can handle the excitement.

So, yes... I hope you can make it. I've missed your face. Seriously. I'd like to hug you. And sing to you. :-)

The details:
Wednesday May 28th @ 9pm
FOR FREE!
Evangenitals (w/ The Jane Does & Kingsley)
@ McMurphys Irish Tavern
72 N Fair Oaks Ave
Pasadena, CA 91103

And if you're too far away, fear not! The Evangenitals are going to be playing a LIVE SHOW on the RADIO on Saturday May 31st that you can listen to WHEREVER you are thanks to the INTERNET!

Greetings, friends of the Evangenitals!

We have several supremely awesome bass players in our extended Evangenital family. The thing with supremely talented bass players is that they are also ridiculously BUSY. So, we're looking to bring some new talent into the fold, as we have a TON of shows and opportunities on the horizon that would sound ever-so-sweeter with delicious bass accompaniment.

Please check out the following "ad" for a bass player and pass it along to anyone that may fit the bill!

**

Have you seen our Bassist?

Fun, eclectic, alt-country/freak folk/cow-punk Los Angeles-based band The Evangenitals (www.evangenitals.com) are in search of a dedicated, talented, flexible and sweet bass player. By sweet we mean not only your mad bass skills; personality counts with us too! If you haven't heard of us, we are an up-and-coming alt-country/indie rock sensation, breaking boundaries and crossing musical borders. Influences include everything from Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline and Willie Nelson to Devo, Ween, Low, The Kinks, Beatles, and Captain Beefheart. We are seeking a bassist with an open mind and open heart who is gig-hungry, travel-ready, spiritually principled, loving, funny, and is open to lots of different musical genres. The Evangenitals have an extended family of part-time/full-time band members and we are in need of more bass players in our stable of fine steeds. Honesty, kindness and no heavy drugs please.

To get to know us better, please take a look at our website (http://www.evangenitals.com) and Myspace page (http://www.myspace.com/evangenitals) and see if you respond to our sounds. You can also check out some videos of the Evangenitals on YouTube here: http://youtube.com/results?search_query=evangenitals&search_type=

If you like what you see and hear, ask yourself the following questions:
Does your schedule allow for weekly rehearsals, as well as about 3 regular shows a month, with a couple more spontaneous shows thrown in? Are you available for not only rock gigs at local LA clubs, but ready to do live soundtrack for experimental theater, recording for indie movies, a few short tours a year, festivals, private parties, hipster weddings, and whatever else the abundant universe seems to throw at us? Are you ready to rumble?

Then heed the call and contact us!

Please send an introduction to you and your work either here on Myspace or at: info@evangenitals.com

We'll check it out and set up an appointment to make some sweet music together!

Cheers,
Rev Juli & the Genitals

Good news, friends of my Genitals!

The Evangenitals song "Hello" from our album Everlovin is going to be Track of the Day - all day long - on May 12th over on GarageBand.com!

Please pay a visit, rate the song, and show your love for this sweet little ditty that's rockin' and shockin' the nation. :-)

Love,
Juli

Greetings my friends.

I have made a play. It is called "The History of Water" and it is being presented at the 24th Street Theater as part of their Saturday Explorer Series... meaning that it's a cutting edge piece of theatrical joy that's recommended for ages 7 & up. Bring the family, bring your mom, bring you lover... there's something for everything in this erratic, dramatic exploration of the substance that makes up most of our planet, and most of our bodies.

The piece features performers Shaughn Buchholz, Lisa Dee, Andrea LeBlanc, and Patrick Ian Moore with musical accompaniment by JP Houston and a very special musical cameo by Artichoke's Timothy Sellers.

There is one show only this time round, so this is indeed the time to see the History of Water!

Reservations are HIGHLY recommended.

Cheers,
Juli

Evangenitals TONIGHT!

The brave and fearless Evangenitals are just about to take the trek up to Canoga Park to play at the Verity Room, which I hear is a nice place... though it's a LOT further than we're used to going for a random gig. When the good folks of Artichoke asked me if the Evangenitals wanted to play the joint, I assumed that the joint was in Los Angeles... most likely east side-ish. Well, I assumed WRONG! So, now we're carpooling it up there to see if we know anybody in the Canoga Park area. Hope so. :-)

Here's the details if anyone is feeling adventurous:

There are exciting things going on in Evangenital-land, and a LOT of them. This weekend is a Nexus of sorts, with 3 shows happening on one night - none of them Evangenitals shows - yet all of them Evangenital-related! Let me explain...

Evangenitals lead singer Juli Crockett (that's me!) has just landed a new gig singing the June Carter Cash parts in the greatest Johnny Cash tribute band ever - Cash'd Out. (http://www.myspace.com/cashdout) Evangenitals drummer George Bernardo has been drumming with them for the past year, and this Saturday night - April 19th at 11pm - I will having my debut performance with Cash'd Out at the "Belly Up" in Solana Beach, CA. If you happen to be in that part of town, I would LOVE to have some friendly faces in the crowd cheering me on!

At the SAME TIME that night, Evangenitals crooner Lisa Dee will be joining our seemingly joined-at-the-hip buddy band ARTICHOKE (http://www.myspace.com/artichoketheband) at MOLLY MALONES for a sure-to-be-awesome show of bumble bee-filled joy. So if you're in THAT part of town, I highly recommend it. (If I weren't singing with Cash'd Out that night, I'd be performing with Artichoke too!)
AND... down at the iO WEST on Hollywood Blvd, Evangenitals flier artist and videographer Patrick Ian Moore will be performing long-form improv with HAMMERSPACE (http://www.myspace.com/hammerspace_improv) - a group that I, Juli Crockett, am normally a part of, yet I simply can't be in three places at once at 11pm on April 19th! Not yet, anyhow! So... if you like to laugh and happen to be in THAT part of town, GO SEE HAMMERSPACE! IT'S FREE!

And if none of this works for you, fear not! The Evangenitals (yes, the REAL band) are playing on April 21st at the Verity Room in Canoga Park... and we would love to see you there. Details on that show are here: http://www.evangenitals.com/calendar.html

So, here's the summary for Saturday April 19th, all at 11pm:

Evangenitals in Austin - The Photos

Evangenitals in Austin
Originally uploaded by juliocrockett
I finally posted some photos from our recent trip to Austin and SXSW on Flickr. Huzzah! Video is coming soon, as our friend Chris Haro has been chopping away at clips from Izzy Cox's performance (check out YouTube, he's put about 6 different videos of her performance up so far), next he'll be putting up the Henry Bermudez solo set, and then the Evangenitals.

Unfortunately, he ran out of battery power and didn't get the Artichoke and Clock Hands Strangle sets on tape. Oh well... they shall live on in my memory, and any of y'all who live in Los Angeles can check out Artichoke on April 19th at Molly Malones!

All in all, the trip to Austin was a much needed spiritual journey into a very musical land and I can't wait to hit the road with this crew again.

The Bruise of Rock...

Tonight I sang backup for Artichoke and played the Tambourine. That may sound like a walk in the park... HOWEVER... the way *I* play the tambourine is a full contact sport! Check out the battle wounds:

You can imagine how messed up I look after playing the tambourine on Gasoline with the Evangenitals... with my groin. Youch!

After the Artichoke show I ran off to Hollywood and performed Improv at the iO WEST, then I ate a Vegan burrito from Cinnamon in Highland Park. Now I'm going to bed. I think I've earned it. :-)

Hey there!

It is I, Juli Crockett, lead singer of the Evangenitals, writing you after a relatively long web-absence that truly tested my mettle in these ultra-connected net-worked-webbed times.

I have been without internet capabilities for over a week, however, tonight all was made right again when the nice folks at the phone company finally turned the internet on in my new place. Yes! I said new place! 1/2 the rent and double the lovely... what more could a gal ask for?

Much has happened since I last wrote... our trip to Austin was amazing, I started playing an electric guitar, the Evangenitals played a fundraiser for the Open Fist Theater with Henry Bermudez on guitar and Joey Ninja on bass, I sang in a show with the super-groovy group Artichoke, my car broke down, I changed residence, and now... this Friday night Lisa Dee and I (aka Evangina) will BOTH be joining Artichoke at La Casa Blue in Highland Park -- demonstrating our backup vocalization skills, our tambourine skills, our whirling tubes skills, and some other tricks-o-the-trade.

Here's the info and lineup for that:

friday @ 9:30
la casa blue
5930 york blvd
highland park, ca 90042
free, all ages!
(alcohol with i.d.)

8:30 braille
9:30 artichoke
10:30 box violet
11:30 bright million

Now, Artichoke will be going on at 9:30 sharp because I have ANOTHER show (Improvin', not Rockin') at the iO WEST in Hollywood with my new Improv team Hammerspace. You're welcome to check that out too, if you're into that kind of stuff. It's free. It's at 11pm. We're occasionally funny. :-)

So that's the news. Look for some Evangenitals shows coming soon in the LA area, a possible West Coast mini-tour in May, and more miracles unfolding than you can imagine.

What's up?

Last Friday night Lisa Dee, myself, (that's Evangina!), guitarist Henry Bermudez, and Timothy Sellers of Artichoke all jumped in a car and drove to Austin to catch a taste of SXSW and play a day show on Sunday. It was a much-need breaking out and breaking away from the day to day, and also a grand display of willingness and mild insanity. The whole thing made me indescribably happy.

Brian and Jerimi, a WONDERFUL couple who restore any lagging faith that any of us could have in humanity and the generosity of the spirit, put us up in Austin and took great care of us. I barely know these folks, and yet they opened their hearts, ears, home, and fridge to us... for fun and for free. Incredible. I also discovered that Austin has free health insurance for musicians and the audiences actually TIP... what am I doing here? I love LA. It's twisted.

It was great to play with Izzy Cox. I've missed her. She is a powerful performer and I look forward to doing more shows with her when she comes out to LA again. We also DEFINITELY plan to return to Austin next year, if not sooner. Now that Henry is going to be playing with us, we are indeed a road-hungry band... we want to play play PLAY and bring the Evangenital joy to every pair of ears that will listen.

I'm going to be posting the photo-journal from the Austin trip on Flickr real soon. I'll post links here when I do.

Tonight we played a fundraiser show with Veruca Salt in downtown LA and we debuted a never-before-seen/heard Evangenitals lineup featuring Joey Ninja of Ninja Academy on bass and the aforementioned Henry Bermudez on lead guitar. It rocked my socks off! I am excited to be revisiting our old tunes with new energy and explore and reinterpret them -- stretch 'em to the snapping point and see what their spine looks like. Constantly changing, exploring, questioning, enjoying, refreshing... I dig it. "The Hole" almost burst into a Reggae jam tonight, people. It was AWESOME!!!

So, the short version is: the flow is flowing once again, the universe is giving me the green light on all things, it seems, and I am revved up and ready to GROW! The party is about to get started, and you're all always invited.

Love, always and already,
Juli

Tonight's the Night!

We made it to Austin safe and sound after a 25 hour adventure-drive of group sing-a-long's and Beaver trivia. After some coffee at Thunderbird and showers for everyone, we met up with our hosts Brian and Jerimi on 6th Street, right in the heart of all the SXSW madness.

Many bars were hopped, we got our groove on to some incredible DJ's at a club where Artichoke Timothy declared a full-on fool-dancing contest at the front stage. We were lucky to catch Rootz Underground closing out a Reggae set at the Flamingo. They were INCREDIBLE!!!

Now it's time for us to play our show! We'll be hanging out, playing, and singing-a-long from 3-8pm at Thunderbird Coffee, 1401 Koenig Lane in Austin, TX.

Izzy Cox at 3pm, Henry Bermudez at 4pm, Evangenitals at 5pm, Artichoke at 6pm, and Clock Hands Strangle at 7pm. This should be grand!

After that, we're hitting some "Chicken Shit Bingo" with Brian and Jerimi and then hitting the long road home. All in all, this has been an awesome and smooth trip so far. Great group of folks for tag-team driving and super conversation... and the sing-a-longs are top notch! :-)

In Search of Unique Acts - Austin, TX

Hey folks!

As you may or may not have heard, I'm hosting a day of music on the fringe of the South by Southwest music fest in Austin, TX on March 16th from 3-8pm. (show info can be found here: www.evangenitals.com/calendar.html

In an effort to make the day more than just a bunch of bands playing (cuz the WHOLE CITY is doing that trick) we wanted to shake things up by inviting some other kinds of acts to jump up on stage and show their stuff... magicians, ventriloquists, contortionists, stand up comedians... anyone who would like to do a short bit in between band set-ups is welcome.

So, if you or someone you know has a special and/or just plain weird talent that they'd like to share with an audience and is going to be in Austin, TX on March 16th, please contact me!

Cheers,
Juli (of the Evangenitals)

I'm working on a new bio for the Evangenitals. It has been awhile since we changed it up, and I'm trying to create something that will grab people's attention from the start, so I'm trottin' out the 'ol boxing tales.

What do you think?

**
The Evangenitals

Formed in December of 2003 by Juli Crockett in the wake of an injury-aborted pro boxing career (3-0, two KOs in the 135 lb. lightweight division), L.A.’s Evangenitals provide certain proof that, in creative matters, the shortest distance between two points isn’t necessarily a straight line. As the group’s principal songwriter and lead vocalist, Juli’s exhaustive performing schedule has coincided with her attentions to ongoing careers as a playwright, stage director, improv artist, ordained minister, and a PhD student in philosophy. She is also rumored to be the inspiration for Hillary Swank's character in the Oscar-winning feature film "Million Dollar Baby" (as reported in Sports Illustrated) and even scored her own page on Wikipedia!

As Juli's pro boxing career ended due to injuries during training, she started writing songs and collaborating musically with good friends Lisa Dee (a classically trained Opera singer) and Brett Lyda (lead guitarist) who all worked at the same sex toy company (ala the Sex Pistols) and shared her leanings toward the style of “urban hillbilly truck-stop lullabies” that have become the group’s signature sound. After a couple years of developing an extended family of fill-ins on the drums, the band finally found their skin-beating soul mate in George Bernardo (who has gigged with the likes of Bad Company, Chuck Berry, and Bo Diddley).

The music is tuneful, steeped in irresistible vocal harmonies and shimmering guitar arpeggios. The tempo of the songs veers from quietly introspective to balls-out raucousness in the blink of an eye. The overall timbre of the voices—Lisa’s trained soprano, Brett’s steady tenor and, in the lead, Juli’s heartbreakingly vulnerable, almost tentative contralto, lends a hypnotic quality to their performances. Lyrics are key: Juli’s meditations on love and sex and the meaning of the universe are witty, often outright funny, simply-put and as lean as a welterweight stepping down in class.

There’s an intimate magnetism about their performances that has, in remarkably short order, attracted a loyal following in the mercurial east-side Los Angeles music scene.

Just over 3 years since forming, the Evangenitals have recorded their first indie collection, "We Are The Evangenitals" and released their sophomore LP “Everlovin” in the fall of 2007.

What Some Folks Say:

"Some days you go looking for the sky but oh lord it's a long walk upwards. Other days you stay down on the earth and find your Evangenitals. Get your tired heart wrung by the best new band since the last best new band ... and maybe the best band after them also." (Colum McCann – Award-winning author of "Dancer")

Have you ever met a retired professional boxer who is working on her Doctorate in Media and Communications, sings lead for an alt-country band, is a published playwright and theater director and works in a sex shop? No? Well then you should meet Juli Crockett. She has done it all and more." (Mike Gormley, Music Connection Magazine)

Gifted with a powerful voice, Crockett makes her distinctive mark as the anti-crooner. She sings with a deep clarity and is able to maintain an odd balance of folky sweetness and country music's signature yee-haw…. At first listen, her vocals call to mind other notable altos like Cher, Grace Slick, and flannel-clad lesbian grunge pop extraordinaire, Linda Perry. Crockett's sound is low, smooth and profound.” (Orphan Records Review)

"The Evangenitals... sound sort of like a cross between Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks and L'il Kim. I bought their album."
(Steve Almond, author of Candyfreak & Not That You Asked)

It is my firm belief that no band in Los Angeles gets more "room respect" (and deservedly so) than the Evangenitals. When these guys play, no one speaks or makes a sound. It's a true phenom.” (Michael Anderson - Stereo-9)

"Like the Dixie Chicks being beaten with their own guitars at the playful hands of the Violent Femmes." (Aaron James, Musician)

"3rd loudest audience applause in the 10 years I've been booking the Buccaneer." (Tim - Booker for The Buccaneer in Sierra Madre)

Hello?

Who would have guessed that "Hello" would be the run-away mini-hit from the new Everlovin album? Patrick, that's who! It was always one of his favorite songs on the album, and it looks like that's the track that is proving to have maximum cross-over appeal.

Thanks be to Addi's balloonhat video for putting it all into perspective and into the public consciousness!

Due to popular demand, I have just added "Hello" to our songs on Myspace. Woo-hoo! Now folks can hear it whenever they like and add it to their profiles and stuff.

The message of the music... DON'T FORGET TO LOVE YOURSELF, PEOPLE!

You can grab the tune here: http://www.myspace.com/evangenitals

In other news, I just entered us into some College Music Contest in which we could win some money and some great opportunities, so please VOTE FOR US!

Addi Somekh of Balloonhat.com (he's also the balloon-bassist in the awesome band Unpopable) recently went to a nursing home and made some spectacular balloon hats for the residents.

The experience got edited down and set to some sweet Evangenitals music (song: "Hello" from our new album Everlovin) and then end result is sheer heart-warming goodness.

Reports have been CONFIRMED that the Evangenitals single "I Just Forgot" off their new album Everlovin' was played over the airwaves of KGLP - Gallup in Gallup, New Mexico by one Mister Tom Funk of the "Green Chile Revival & Medicine Show".

Mister Funk requested that more Evangenitals tunes be sent to him as soon as possible.

You can pay a visit to KGLP (listen online, let them know what great taste Tom Funk has, etc) by clicking this link: http://www.kglp.org/

You can listen to "I Just Forget" on Last.fm by clicking this link: http://www.last.fm/music/Evangenitals/_/I+Just+Forgot

And heck, you can buy the tune in mp3 form off of iTunes, CDBaby, or the Snocap store on our Myspace page

I can tell from the "backend" reports on our website that someone out there has been searching for the lyrics to the song "McCann" -- written about the Irish writer and awesome human Colum McCann, whom I met while he was a professor at the European Graduate School in Saas-Fee, Switzerland, where I'm pursuing my PhD.

I'm guessing this may have to do with the fact that Evangina just started playing this song out and about town this fair 2008. Though written long ago, for whatever reason the Evangenitals never picked this tune up and ran with it. It is, however, just folksy and forlorn enough for Evangina to let it emanate from our lovesick breasts, so we have been doing so -- from Mr T's Bowl to the Hyperion Tavern. (So, Silverlake, if you've been smelling some melancholy and Irish jigs in the air lately, maybe it's the spirit of McCann seeping into the groundwater.)

Always quick to respond to public demands, I have gone ahead and posted the lyrics for the McCann song. You can find them here: "McCann, McCann..."

Love,
Juli

Awesome News and our First Review!

Finally.... someone has reviewed our new album! Thankfully, they really liked it. :-)

Peter is a fan from the UK that we met when we opened for Trainwreck at the Knitting Factory. He came to see Trainwreck, and left loving the Evangenitals. I was hoping he would really dig our 2nd album, especially after waiting for it to make the long journey across the Atlantic.

You can read his review on our album page at CDBaby.com, and hopefully, for those of you who have heard the new album, it will inspire you to write your own!

http://cdbaby.com/cd/evangenitals2

You can also log in and review the album on iTunes. Every review is incredibly helpful, as it helps us get "star ratings" and spreads the good word about the Evangenitals.

And now, here's some Awesome News:

*We're on Last.fm! http://www.last.fm/music/The+Evangenitals

If you are not familiar with Last.fm, I'd highly recommend checking it out. It's incredible internet radio.

*We got an awesome write-up from Orphan Records!
Check it out!

*George's Birthday is on November 17th!

*We're playing a welcome home show at Mr T's Bowl with Ollin on November 26th!

And if you haven't seen/rated/commented and passed on the new Evangenitals video to everyone you know... you can do it here:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=3kMky9EinZY

Remember, anything you can do to help spread the word about the Evangenitals helps to keep the dream alive, so thanks for everything!

NEWSFLASH! Rabid WEEN fan calls out the Evangenitals for "antic ripping"

I don't know how many of you frequent the Ween Forum but if you know me at all, you may know that I absolutely adore that friggin' band and they are a huge influence and inspiration to me. So you can imagine my combination of giddiness and utter despair when this forum post was brought to my attention:

"So, this band rips off WEEN'S stage antics... The band is the Evangenitals."

To be fair, I was totally doing an homage to Ween's "Painting the Town Brown" live album that night, which, if you don't know it, means that before and after every song I would say, "This song is ______, by the Evangenitals." Any serious Ween fan who listens to a lot of live albums and bootlegs would probably pick up on a number of shout-outs and nuances on my "stage antics" that are inspired by Deaner and Gener. Those boys are like icons in my mind that help me get through shows without having a panic attack. When in doubt, I simply pretend like I'm Gener prancing about in a Hawaiian shirt and his Las Vegas-worthy bravado helps me get through the night.

In the end, it seemed that the Ween Forum members, who are usually horrifically cutthroat, came out on the side of the Evangenitals... considering that Ween is a band who is known for the frequent homage, cover, rip off, and riffing on the styles of those who came before.

In other news, Ween's new album "La Cucaracha" has been on rotation in my iTunes with a horrific frequency lately. To be honest, I can't stop listening to it. That and Devendra Banhart's "Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon". The Devendra Banhart album is getting an average of 3 full plays per day, while Ween's La Cucaracha is coming in at an average of twice a day.

Banhart does have a bit of an advantage, though, as the album has a lot of super-mellow cuts which means I can keep playing "Smokey" late into the night in my apartment building without disturbing my neighbors. "With My Own Bare Hands" wouldn't go over so well at 3am... however, it has earned its place on my "if I were a stripper" playlist! It is filthy, fierce, and delightful. I love it.

The Evangenitals - What Every Mega Church Is Missing

Have you ever entertained impure thoughts and desires? Have you found that your illicit highs keep getting lower? Have you ever touched yourself or wished someone else would? Do you need to be saved?? If you've answered "yes" to any of the preceding questions, the Evangenitals are your VIP + 1 drink pass to salvation!

This five-piece alt/country/neo/folk outfit from Los Angeles initially formed in 2004 as something of a private joke, when a crappy day at the office for Juli Crockett, Brett Lyda and Lisa Dee might have meant a nationwide recall on nipple clamps. The three founding members of the Evangenitals met while working together at a sex toy company and registered their band domain name before there ever was a band. However, as songs were written and performed, fans accumulated, and their popularity spread throughout the Los Angeles area.

Their 2005 debut, "We are the Evangenitals," features a well-balanced blend of barnyard stomp and ethereal harmonies. Gifted with a powerful voice, Crockett makes her distinctive mark as the anti-crooner. She sings with a deep clarity and is able to maintain odd balance of folky sweetness and country music's signature yee-haw .

On "The Work Song," Crockett sings of the mundane and redundant in a way that somehow manages to be entrancing. At first listen, her vocals call to mind other notable altos like Cher, Grace Slick, and flannel-clad lesbian grunge pop extraordinaire, Linda Perry. Crockett's sound is low, smooth and profound, and even the most diehard of Perry fans is likely to be moved by the pastoral beauty produced on tracks like "Beautiful Boy" and "Lisa's Song".

"Hey Ya" was the persistent pop tune that your grandmother and her ninety-year-old pinnacle partner could discuss over gingersnaps. The song inspired a number of ironic covers from smart-alecky indie bands, and if you went to a $12 show in 2003, you probably heard "Hey Ya" at least once. A testament to their dexterity, the Evangenitals cover the Andre 3000 classic as a slow and haunting folk incantation. It is without question one of the most radiant tracks on "We are the Evangenitals". Eat your heart out, 3000.

Though not entirely unclassifiable, the Evangenitals are versatile and multi-layered, and will likely carry a 'slash' in their genre classification for as long as they exist as a band of Southern Californian country bumpkins. As is customary with folk music, they create traditional sounds for everyday people, which is perhaps their greatest strength. The fact that they can spare you fire and brimstone is simply an added bonus.

The band's sophomore release, "Everlovin", should be available through CD Baby and iTunes shortly…See ya at the next hell raisin'.

This was definitely a highlight of the Road to Oprah tour!

Thank you for the good times, SPOT (Skate Park of Tampa)!!
This is possibly the greatest music video ever...

This is Kate Flannery (Meredith on The Office) and Scot Robinson (my improv teacher at IO West, who was in Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burghttp://www.blogger.com/img/gl.link.gifundy) as "" - an awesome and slightly tragic lounge act duo that perform the first Saturday of every month at the Improv Olympic in Hollywood. I highly recommend the show.

If you like that video, their mash-up of Mandy/Brandy/Candy/Andy will knock your socks off!

Please take pleasure in loving them. :-)

Updates from the R2O...

Blogging has been tough from the Road to Oprah. Too much going on, and when there is down-time we’re usually in the middle of nowhere with no email/web services.

Chapel Hill with North Carolina was amazing. First we got biodiesel at Larry’s Coffee in Raleigh NC and then we crashed at academy award winning documentary filmmaker Barbara Trent’s house. We ate fresh veggies from her garden, ate under the stars on her back porch, and had a good old fashioned musical hootenanny after dinner.

In Washington DC the whole trip became a grand success when Michelle Brown gave us a check for $10,000 at a house party and became our #3 producer and the top personal donor to The 1 Second Film. We also got some awesome footage in front of the Capital Building and the Lincoln & Washington Memorials.

Baltimore is an incredibly beautiful and desperate city. There were more boarded up buildings and run down/uninhabitable neighborhoods in Baltimore than there were in New Orleans. We happened upon an event where Montel Williams was speaking and tried to get some time with him, however, we were kicked out of the area when folks began to get more excited about The 1 Second Film and our Road to Oprah tour than they were about Montel’s free pharmaceutical drug program.

Linda Evans of the University of Baltimore got us hooked up with nice hotel rooms for the nice, which was super fantastic, then we were off to Philadelphia in the morning. We stopped at Baltimore Biodeisel, which shared a building with a truly fantastic Organic Market where we loaded up on some great juice, coffee, and B99 biodiesel.

Philadelphia was a beautiful town and Nirvan’s friend Rebecca from New College was a beautiful host. The place we played, Silk City Lounge, was a super cool renovated old 50’s diner. The night could have been planned a little better, ran WAY late, and had really slow transitions HOWEVER we still played a great show and rocked the house that we had at 1am on a Tuesday night. :-)

On to Brooklyn! The event at Vox Pop was a crown jewel of the Road to Oprah tour thus far. So many old friends whom I hadn’t laid eyes on in quite some time. It seemed almost everyone in the Evangenitals and Road to Oprah crew had some friends and/or family in New York that came out to see us on a rainy night in Brooklyn. Eric Talbert (who helped organize the event) and Webster from Golden Birds (the other band that played) are friends of mine from The European Graduate School in Saas- Fee, Switzerland and this was the first time that I had seen them on US soil! My brother (photographer Jaisen Crockett) came out, Dan Paquin from Dirt Bike Annie (RIP) whom I went to NYU with was there and gave me his new album of 15 second punk songs. Sean Lewis, performance artist extraordinare made an appearance. My favorite costume designer in the universe Irina Kruzhilina. Good people all around!

We slept in the bus on Flatbush Ave and right now we’re driving down Houston heading toward Washington Square Park. We just rolled by Ground Zero and saw the big hole in the ground. In a few minutes we’ll be heading up to Harlem to meet documentary film legend Albert Maysels, director of Grey Gardens and the first man to film the Beatles in the US.

More soon, I hope. The Road to Oprah is growing near the end!
