Playing Musical Life

I'm at the Good Hurt in Venice, watching Evangenitals bassist Keith Lubow play REALLY LOUD old punk with his *other* band, The Bloody Brains. I got out here early in a beat-the-traffic carpool scenario with Evangenitals drummer David Hurlin and we passed the pre-show time perusing fine used books in the Sam Johnson bookshop, right across the street from the Good Hurt. I found a stash of incredible Swedenborg books, which brought back memories of my obsession with August Strindberg back when I was at CalArts.

Earlier today, I got the keys for the Evangenitals new 24/7 lockout rehearsal space in Echo Park at the newly built (and still under construction), sure to be hot-spot Bedrock Studios. Its an exciting time for the Evangenitals... Or course, aint it always?

This past weekend we laid down 6 tracks for a new demo. Listening to the unfinished mixes, I'm already excited as hell. We recorded with Tracy Chisholm at Del Boca Vista studios in South Pasadena, and the whole band now has the recording bug. I'm thinking the Moby Dick EP is our next move, and soon. It was a total joy to spend ridiculously long hours in the studio with the gang, and I can't wait to do more more MORE!!!

Its awesome to be here in support Keith in his "loud" band... in which he is the youngest member by a good 30 year margin. I am really glad I brought earplugs, as I want to keep my hearing orbs in good shape for a long, long time whilst we skip down the wild and wonderful road of this musical life. :-)

God Bless Henry Miller!

"The way of life is towards fulfillment, however, wherever it may lead. To restore a human being to the current of life means not only to impart self-confidence but also an abiding faith in the process of life. A man who has confidence in himself must have confidence in other, confidence in the fitness and rightness of the universe. When a man is thus anchored he ceases to worry about the fitness of things, about the behavior of his fellow men, about right and wrong and justice and injustice. If his roots are in the current of life he will float on the surface like a lotus and he will blossom and give forth fruit. He will draw his nourishment from above and below; he will send his roots down deeper and deeper, fearing neither the depths nor the heights. The life that is in him will manifest itself in growth, and growth is an endless, eternal process. he will not be afraid of withering, because decay and death are part of growth. As a seed he began and as a seed he will return. Beginnings and ending are only partial steps in the eternal process. The process is everything... the way... the Tao.

The way of life! A grand expression. Like saying Truth. There is nothing beyond it... it is all."

Happy Merry Holy Days from the Evangenitals!

As we near the end of '08 and the beginning of the greatest year to date in Evangenitals history ('09, baby!) I wanted to tell you all how much we love you.

Yes, we love YOU. A lot. :-)

I hope you are having a good holiday season and enjoying it in the way you like. Salted, peppered, fried, grilled, sweet, spicy, bold, beautiful... whatever your preference is. Yum!

As we don't have your mailing address, we thought we'd send you web presents this year, and all next year long, in the form of BLOGS!

** David Hurlin is writing an AWESOME drumming blog!
http://drumtheory.blogspot.com

** Lisa Dee is blogging again!
http://lisadeedle.blogspot.com

** And I'm writing a new blog about all the insane books I'm reading while working on my PhD dissertation in Philosophy!
http://onebookoneweek.blogspot.com

We The Evangenitals are excited about the coming of '09 -- we've got a new album on the horizon, some exciting developments in the booking & management departments, and the loving feelings just keep getting bigger and better and more more more.

We all felt pretty blessed to be able to spend Christmas Eve playing music together at the home of two of our biggest fans (Jain and Eliot Sekular), and we are REALLY excited about closing out the year with a show at Mr T's Bowl on December 30th!

Details are here: http://www.evangenitals.com/calendar.html

It's our Eve of New Year's Eve party and we're pulling out all the stops with new songs, new instrumentation, the biggest ensemble so far, and boundless optimism as we trudge nearer to 2012! :-)

Henry Bermudez: The Sweat Chronicles

Evangenitals lead guitarist Henry Bermudez is a WORKING MAN. When he steps on the stage to play guitar, he gives it all he's got. And then some. And he sweats. Seriously. The man SWEATS; hot beads of pure passion and sonic steam. It's a spectacle of hydrological transformation that never fails to amaze me. I've seen the guy play with 3 bands in the same night, in a row, and every set he's soaking wet. Freshly wet. It seems he's ALWAYS got more sweat to give. It's incredible.

So, I thought I'd present the following pictorial as proof of this pheromone phenomenon, and as a tribute to this phenomenal guitar player. Ladies and Gentlemen, Henry Bermudez!

Image 1:
Note the un-sweaty shirt. This is clearly the beginning of the show.

Image 2:
The smallest of spots are starting to show. Check out those mallets David Hurlin's got!

Image 3:
Note the pronounced center sweat spot, and the beginning of the "wild hair" syndrome.

Image 4:
Wild Hair is officially on the loose. Hurlin and Lubow are focused on the business at hand.

Image 5:
Note the body and bounce of the dark locks; the hair is not yet completely drenched. The shirt, however, is a different story.

Image 6:
Now the hair is both wet AND wild.

Image 7:
Final stages of a full-on soggy frenzy. Glory be!

So, let's all raise a glass of cool, precious bodily fluid-replenishing water to this fine young man who brings so much mojo to the art-country hillbilly love punk rock revolution good time gang known as The Evangenitals. Hip hip, hooray!

And be sure to give him a big sloppy hug after the next show. It's quite the experience. :-)

The Evangenitals Reside at Mr T's Bowl

For the past few months, The Evangenitals have been making a steady habit of playing at Mr T's Bowl in Highland Park and the consistency is working a number on my heart strings. I really do love that joint. Mr T's Bowl is where the Evangenitals first stepped on the stage (at Arlo's Open Mic night) and sung our first tender tunes in public. It's where we got our first "big break" (booked to headline at El Cid by promoter Michael Anderson), and it's where we've met, made, and converted some of the most dedicated Evangenitals friends and fans imaginable.

In the olden days, all of the Evangenitals (there were only 3 of us at that time) used to live in Highland Park, IN THE SAME APARTMENT BUILDING, which made band practice a breeze & Mr T's Bowl was just a few blocks up the street. Almost every night of the week, you could find one or more of the Evangenitals at the Bowl, either playing the open mic, on the night's lineup, or supporting our friend's bands like The Natural Disasters, Fascinoma, Unpoppable, Killsonic, Cousin Junebug, Eagle and Talon, Cat Hair Ensemble, Artichoke, Ukefink, Hidden... it was a real family affair.

Then manifest destiny kicked in and we started venturing West, exploring new neighborhoods and venues all over Los Angeles, from the Derby in Los Feliz to the Knitting Factory where we opened for Trainwreck. We were regulars at Highland Grounds for a bit before it closed down, and even made it all the way to the ocean to play at O'Brien's Pub in Santa Monica. Everywhere we have played has it's charms, though none of 'em have the same home-baked feeling of Mr T's Bowl.

Well, some months ago, the booker of the bowl, Gus, decided that the Evangenitals had drifted away from our 'ol home base for far too long and it was time to get back to our roots. We, roots-loving folks that we are, were in total agreement and made a commitment to play the first Wednesday of every month. It has been good, and I hope we keep on going into '09 with it.

If you don't know the joint, not only is Mr T's Bowl an infamous and important staple in the Los Angeles music scene ("Beck used to play there!" is one of the more popular pieces of evidence toward it's cool/less factor)... the sound man, Arlo, is one of the best in the business, and plays some of the greatest in-between-acts tunes imaginable. For example, after we closed out our set last night with a rousing version of Gasoline (I even did a cartwheel into the audience, it was THAT rousing!) he turned on John Coltrane's version of "My Favorite Things".

Hells yells! :-)

So, as the year begins to come to a close, it seems that I'm having a kind of nostalgia that goes both backward and forward, simultaneously. I'm loving where the band has been, all the adventures we've had (like the epic Road to Oprah tour with The 1 Second Film!) and I'm REALLY excited about the FUTURE!

I adore the current incarnation of the Evangenitals, the ways in which we are growing, evolving, changing, the new music we are making, the revisioning of old songs, the addition of new instrumentation and players, and especially the LOVE that keeps bubbling up, flowing through me, and spouting out like a big 'ol fountain of joy. I dig it. And it seems I'm not the ONLY one that is digging it... word on the street is that we are pretty cool.

What's your word?

Evangenitals - Gasoline 11/25/08

Juli

An Evangenital in Spaceland

*** THIS JUST IN ***

Evangenitals drummer David Hurlin is going to be drumming with EZRA REICH (http://ping.fm/f4xDC) TONIGHT (Tuesday Dec 2nd) at 11pm.

Since I can't be there (I'm in San Diego recording Johnny Cash/June Carter tunes with Cash'd Out) I'm hoping YOU can go and see this rare spectacle. :-)

Ezra Reich's music is (in my opinion) like John Maus arm-wrestling David Lynch in a Technicolor water ballet. Yes, you can quote me on that.

Regardless of how you felt about the 80's, you will be sure to appreciate how friggin' TIGHT this act is. I'm talking ORCHESTRATED. With STRINGS, man.

So go do it, dig it, and support our dear David Hurlin on his fantastic voyage. :-)

Much love,
Juli Crockett & the Evangenitals

A Poem

There is a statue in Baltimore, MD of Edgar Allan Poe in which he is portrayed with an enormous penis, tightly packed in his slacks,
bulging & unmistakable.
I wondered, upon beholding this vision, if it was perchance stipulated in his will that he be portrayed thusly,
in perpetuity.

An Evangenitals Survey: Booking for Love in All the Right Places

Hello!

In order to serve YOU, our dear musical connoisseur, in the BEST possible way, we are asking that you take part in this brief survey.

YOUR ANSWERS could truly help us to determine our FUTURE... and that's pretty cool. :-)

1. What are your favorite venues, in your town and/or in the world at large, that you would LOVE to see the Evangenitals PERFORMING at? (Think big! Think weird! Think sideways!)

2. What other bands/acts (local, regional, national) would you THRILL to see the Evangenitals playing WITH and/or opening FOR? (Reveal to us your eclectic tastes!)

3. How on EARTH would you describe the SOUND and/or GENRE of the Evangenitals to another human?** In a sentence. (I'm really excited about this one!)

** Need a sonic refresher? You can preview the Evangenitals albums here: http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/evangenitals2

We'll leave it at that for now, as I don't want to overwhelm you with questions. You can expect to be getting some more short surveys like this one in the near future, though, as we have some other tricks up our sleeves... like a new website to design! :-)

I would also like to remind you that I, Juli Crockett, lead singer & songwriter for the Evangenitals, am a REAL GIRL and it is truly I, Juli Crockett, who writes these emails to YOU, dear heart, and I really do CARE about HOW you're doing, WHAT you're THINKING and FEELING, and would LOVE to hear your opinions on ALL THINGS related to the Evangenitals, and even things that are NOT related to the Evangenitals.

I love you. Seriously. And I'd like to keep in touch. So reach out and tickle the keyboard. I am here for you.

Much Love,
Juli & the Evangenitals

I feel like it's New Year's Eve Deluxe Day! I've got that Christmas morning feeling. I'm feeling Thankful about Thanksgiving. This is a Holy Holiday indeed!

Change is in the air, it's happening, it's everywhere, permeating the pores, in all directions, and it's EXCITING. I'm excited. I'm friggin' delighted.

To celebrate, the Evangenitals and friends are playing at Mr T's Bowl TONIGHT, Wednesday November 5th. And it's FREE... just like health care and education ought to be. :-)

Mr T's Bowl - 10pm
5621 1/2 Figueroa Ave
Los Angeles, CA 90042

Our good friends Confessions of a Corn Silo are playing at 9pm and we highly suggest you hear them, too. Evangenitals play at 10pm. Kid Moxie (11pm) and Death to Fresh (12am) will take care of your later night needs. :-)

In other news, this new age of love that is being ushered in has made us realize that we're really not the Battle of the Bands type. No more aggression. Only love. Tough love, sure. Dirty hillbilly love, hell yeah. Tender "hand is a talon" love, bring it on. No more winners and losers in the New Paradigm. Just share-ers and lover-ers. So, no show in Hermosa Beach on November 9th. We'll have something lovely to offer you soon. :-)
